Thanks to Hulu, I finally got to watch every stinking Season 2 episode of the TNT Drama, The Last Ship. Thank. God.
Like any other person who has ever served in the military, anytime I see a film or television show that centers around something I know about military service, I pick it apart. To death.
I’m not sure why I do it, but it happens.
But it’s not that way when I watch The Last Ship. I love that show! The producers must have taken the adage, “The devil is in the detail,” to heart because they’ve done a fantastic job at making the audience really feel like they’re watching a crew of military personnel aboard a US Navy destroyer.
In case you’ve never seen it, The Last Ship follows the crew of the USS Nathan James, who went on deployment, only to find out in the middle of it that they were some of the few people left in the world who didn’t catch a disease that was killing off humans at an alarming rate.
Coincidentally, what I love about the show is the same as what I hate about it – it gets too real. Just like in a real deployment, life usually gives at least one crew member some of the craziest situations to overcome. It goes beyond the “Dear John” letters, and travels into “WTF” territory.
For example, on my deployment, one of our crew members helped a Sailor dissolve his marriage to a drug addicted porn star while we were in the Mediterranean.
For the USS Nathan James, that crew member is Lt. Alisha Granderson, portrayed by actress Christina Elmore.
Lt. Granderson already had a hard life in Season 1. Turns out, her mom (portrayed by legendary actress Alfre Woodard) was 10 times the jerk that Poppa Pope would ever be. On top of that, she had the nerve to be a damn politician. Seriously, she’s Satan’s little sister.
LT handled her mom’s tomfoolery pretty well in Season 1. But in Season 2, her life got worse, and it wasn’t necessarily because her mom graduated from Satan’s sister to Satan’s wife. It was because she had to deal with some really awful life problems. Here are several instances where The Last Ship’s writers took things too far with Lt. Granderson’s life in Season 2. Click the photos to read the captions.
1. WHEN SHE TRIED TO MAKE HER CRAZY MOMMA TURN HERSELF IN FOR WAR CRIMES, BUT IT DIDN’T WORK
2. WHEN SHE GOT SHOT BY ONE OF HER MOM’S HENCHMEN
Look at poor Lt. Granderson, laid out on the floor and struggling to survive. She also sustained other injuries this season, and somehow she still keeps on ticking. Sheesh!
3. THAT TIME SHE BLAMED HERSELF FOR HER MOM’S WICKED WAYS
The poor thing was trying to find a way to apologize to the crew for her mom trying to kill all of humanity. Tsk, tsk.
4. WHEN SHE POSSIBLY FOUND A BOO, BUT THAT SHIP’S FRATERNIZATION POLICY WAS RUINING EVERYTHING
5. BUT HER COMMANDING OFFICER WAS LURKING BECAUSE HE ALREADY KNEW WHAT TIME IT WAS
If you don’t learn anything else from a Navy deployment, you will always know who is thinking about touching on each other.
6. THE GIRL IS ON WATCH SO MUCH THAT THEY MADE A WHOLE ADVERTISEMENT ABOUT HER BEING ON WATCH
Can we see the girl running on a treadmill, eating an ice cream cone, or something else besides always being on watch? Let the girl live!
Here’s to hoping her life sucks a less bad in Season 3, which premieres Sunday, June 12 on TNT.
Do you watch the show? What are your Season 3 predictions?
